Friendly turtles delighting Pafos swimmers

Swimmers at the Pafos municipal baths beach have been treated to the sight of two loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) swimming in the area.

The head of Paphos swimmers association Matheos Ierokipiotis told the Cyprus News Agency that the two turtles have been seen in the area over the last few days.

“Many of us had the luck to admire them from a close distance and it was admittedly an excellent sight,” he said.

Swimmers said that turtles have also been seen at Rikkos beach in Geroskipou and Kathari beach in Timi.

He added that turtles are very friendly towards humans, but they must be protected.

The green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the loggerhead turtle and their eggs have been protected by law since 1971, as both turtles, especially the green, are endangered species.
