The successes for Cypriot track and field keep coming at the 31st Olympic Games in Rio. In the early hours of Monday, Kyriacos Ioannou and Demetris Chondrokoukis made history after qualifying for the finals in the high jump.
This will be the first time that Cyprus will be represented by two athletes in a track and field final, while Ioannou became the first Cypriot to qualify twice for an Olympic final, after his participation in the 2012 Olympics in London.
The high jump qualifier was tense for the two athletes, who had to wait until the last jump to find out whether they had made it into the final. Though they failed to clear the 2.29 metre jump cleared by 11 other athletes, they qualified into the final by being among the four athletes who cleared the previous jumps without fail.
The final will take place on Wednesday at 2:30am Cyprus time.
