Mini heat-wave to hit on Monday

The Meteorological Services announced on Sunday that Cyprus will be in the grips of a mini heat-wave as from Monday, with temperatures expected to surpass 40 degrees Celsius.


Temperatures for Monday are expected to be 41 degrees inland, 34 degrees along the west coast and 35 degrees along the remaining coastal areas while temperatures on Troodos are expected to reach 30 degrees Celsius.

Similar temperatures are forecasted for Tuesday and Wednesday while Thursday may see a slight drop in temperature.

The public is advised to take all the necessary precautions and should:

Avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun and heavy exercise, and shady areas should be preferred. It is also advisable to avoid crowded areas.

Wear light clothing and make use of a hat and sunglasses if you are to be exposed to the sun.

Avoid alcoholic drinks, caffeine, and heavy foods which contain fats, seasonings, and chocolate.

Drink plenty of water.

Use a fan or air-conditioner during the hottest parts of the day, while it is best to keep windows open during the night.

Have regular lukewarm showers during the day.

People with respiratory or heart-related problems should consult their doctors in case they need to take additional precautions.

Sensitive groups such as young children, the elderly and pregnant women should take particular care.
