Police in Paphos were involved in a high-speed chase in the early hours of Monday morning after a motorist refused to stop when a traffic officer signaled to him to stop.
The incident occurred at around 1.30am on Sotirakis Markides Street in Paphos, close to the beach front in Geroskippou, where traffic police were conducting routine traffic inspections.
When the suspect was ordered to pull over, he instead sped off at high speed prompting a patrol car to give chase. It was during the pursuit that the car scraped some side-railings and then crashed into the chasing patrol car – injuring an officer in the process.
The driver then entered a field before then escaping on foot in a reed bed.
Officers approached the abandoned car to find a 24-year-old woman in the passenger’s seat and an air gun that was not registered as well as pellets.
The woman was placed under arrest while a search is underway for the driver who is wanted for charges relating to dangerous driving, failing to comply with police instructions, causing a traffic accident, abandoning the scene of a traffic accident, dangerous and reckless driving as well as illegal possession of firearms.
The injured officers were treated for minor wounds at Paphos General Hospital and later released.
