A draft resolution for the renewal of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) mandate has been handed over, with delay, by the United Kingdom to the rest UN Security Council permanent members.
The draft is described as a “technical one” and its differences from last January`s resolution are minor. This is why a Security Council diplomatic source considers that all UNSC permanent members will agree on it soon.
The resolution is expected to be adopted during an open meeting on July 26, while the Council`s members will be briefed by the UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide, on July 25.
Meanwhile, UNSG`s Special Representative in Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar, was expected to brief on Wednesday UNFICYP contributing countries.
