Visual artist Yiannis Sakellis will be in residence at Almyra for the first 12 days of August to create a site-specific installation, “Cappella.” Visit our light-infused lobby to find the artist at work on a perforated dome.
The perforations will filter sunlight into narrow beams that dance in a sacred shadow theatre—a “Cappella,” or chapel. Working with the vibrant play of light on our Mediterranean shore, the artist also reflects on the lobby as a place of transit, of encounters with strangers, and of the recreation of the self during holiday sojourns.
Sakellis is a native of Paphos who trained at the Perugian Academy of Fine Arts in Italy. His short film “The Box” will be screened continuously during the residency in the nearby Danae Room. Bring the whole family to meet the artist and observe his creative process. On August 12, join us at 20:30 to celebrate the finissage—a presentation by the artist of the completed work.
