“A crash helmet was found at the scene of the crash but investigations are underway to determine if Charilaou had been wearing it at the time of the crash”, commented the head of Paphos Traffic Department Zenonas Psathitis.

The 23-year-old driver of the car, said to be a Russian national, underwent a blood alcohol test which found no trace of alcohol in his blood.

He told investigators that he had not seen Charilaou and his moped because of the inadequate lighting on that particular stretch of the road. The driver is currently in police custody.

Other fatal and serious accidents have also occurred along the Paphos-Coral Bay road over the years with the local authorities calling for improvements, including better lighting.
